    Hurricane Run

        (A perfect 12 furlong pedigree)

2005 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Hurricane Run ran to his pedigree when emerging victorious from this prestigious classic race. His Conduit Mare Profile of (2-6-5-8-6) (0.60) (8/14), and Triads of (13-19-19) spotlight endurance, and the fact that his connections brought him up to the race in wonderful condition, to the point where his genetic makeup took over, is a tribute to their training acumen.

Hurricane Run's pedigree is full of solid French and German stamina influences, particularly through female family lines, and his sire, Montjeu, won this classic race in 1999. His German bred dam, Hold On, is sired by leading broodmare sire, Surumu, long one of Germany's premier stallions. The mare Noorani is duplicated in the pedigree through her sons, Sheshoon, and Charlottesville, both of whom are influences for stamina, which adds more "bottom" to the mix.

Another duplication of note is that of Tantieme, considered the best horse of his era in Europe, and who was the back-to-back winner of the 'Arc in 1950 and 1951. Tantieme was at home in all types of going, and relished soft surfaces. His adaptability in handling off going perhaps overrode the dislike of that type of surface in the descendants of Noorani (Charlottesville and Sheshoon). Add a sprinkling of Sharpen Up, who traces tail female to the German bred conduit mare, Barcorole, and you have a mixture that fit this event perfectly.

The conduit mares of the sire, Montjeu (Catalpa), and dam, Hold On (Valve), have very similar pedigrees which, in conjunction, forms a solid foundation for this family record. Valve (I/C) is the conduit of Epsom Derby winner Shirley Heights, Preakness winner, Greek Money, and the stallions, Stephen Got Even, Silic, Kiri's Clown, and Lord Avie, among many. Catalpa (S) is descended from Maid of the Glen, a mare who's family roots are in question due to recent genetic mapping of the thoroughbred. Despite that disparity, the quality of the recent performers whose blood flows through Catalpa, stamp this mare as a strong influence on many of todays runners and producers, such as, multiple G1 winner and sire, Dear Doctor (Arlington Million, etc), and the fine mare, Ribbon, who won the G2 Middlepark Stakes, and ran second in the St. Leger, Oaks Stakes, and the 1000 Guineas.
